BRITT | A public hearing for the proposed 2018-19 West Hancock Community Schools budget is set for March 19.
The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the West Hancock Middle School, 423 E. Fifth St., in Kanawha before the regular board meeting.
Superintendent Wayne Kronemann declined to comment on whether the proposed budget that he and Board Secretary Mona Buns put together will be an increase over the 2017-18 budget ahead of the hearing because the teachers’ wages haven’t been negotiated and the state hasn’t set allowable growth yet.
“It’s all speculation at this point,” he said.
Kronemann said more than 70 percent of the district’s budget is attributed to employees’ wages.
“I guess one thing I could tell you is because we have 57 less kids approximately from two years ago that the amount the state will allow us to budget will be lower because that’s what your budget is based on,” he said.
Kronemann said the proposed budget will be published for the public within 20 days of the hearing.
During the hearing, a budget presentation will be given. The board will vote on the budget during the business portion of its agenda.
