BRITT | The growing interest in do-it-yourself projects — with much credit to Pinterest and HGTV shows like “Fixer Upper” — have likely contributed to the increased foot traffic at Swenson’s Hardware in Britt for home improvement products.

And for good reason.

Swenson’s Hardware has been a one-stop shop and 40-year destination for local residents’ home improvement needs.

“I can place orders for more than 70,000 items,” he said.

But the walls and shelves of Swenson’s Hardware at 7 Main Avenue North, in Britt, are full of possibility.

Interior paint, spray paint and kitchen hardware are the most popular items Swenson sells for home-improvement projects. Paint, he said, is by far the biggest seller.

“Pinterest is one of the biggest sellers of ideas around here,” he said, adding many people are taking old items and repurposing them with a fresh coat of paint or new hardware. “Crafty has become popular.”

Swenson said individuals refinishing kitchen cabinets, including spray painting knobs satin nickel or oil-rubbed bronze, has “taken off.”

LED light bulbs of all shapes and sizes, DIY plumbing equipment and sheetrock repair kits are also popular items for anyone looking for affordable and efficient options.

Swenson said if there’s something someone needs and can’t find, he can order it and have it delivered to the store with no freight.

Swenson’s Hardware is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and closed Sunday.
