KANAWHA | A group of Laurie Christians’ friends hopes a benefit will relieve the financial burden during her cancer journey.
Christians of Kanawha was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2017 and has been receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments in Des Moines.
“She’s stepped up and done quite a few benefits for different people throughout the town, and she was always big into doing tournaments,” said Becky Engh, who has known Christians for nearly 30 years and is helping organize the benefit. “We want to help with some of her medical expenses.”
The benefit will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Kanawha Fire Station, 104 S. Main St., and feature a silent auction, a live auction and a meal.
The meal, including a pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, potato salad, chips, a dessert bar and a beverage, will be available for a free-will donation.
After the benefit, The Kraft Brothers will perform at the Town Tap for a $2 cover charge. Individuals must have a wristband and be 21 years old to attend.
Proceeds from the benefit and the concert will go toward Christians’ family to help offset some of the medical and travel expenses.
Engh said items for the silent and live auctions may be dropped off at the Town Tap after 3 p.m. each day until the benefit.
