MASON CITY | Members of the Dean Welsh VFW Auxiliary Post 4370, Britt, will be featured at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, on the National VFW Auxiliary's National Organization's Facebook page, for their work with sending care packages.

As of October 20, 2017, auxiliary members have shipped 86 packages to the U.S.S Fitzgerald guided missile destroyer, and the U.S.S. John S. McCain, guided missile destroyer.

The U.S.S Fitzgerald lost seven lives in the incident that took place on June 17, 2017 and the U.S.S. McCain lost ten lives when the ship was struck on August 21, 2017.

The VFW Auxiliary of Britt, have been working diligently since June, to send care package aid to the service members aboard the two ships.

The request to help came from GM1 Brianna Downer, granddaughter of auxiliary member, Jean A. Perkins, to the members of the auxiliary.

Downer is currently serving in the U.S. Navy and when she is out to sea, serves on a guided-missile destroyer.

The U.S.S. Fitzgerald is being returned to the U.S. for repairs, and the repairs on the USS John S. McCain will be made in Japan.
