CHARLES CITY — The Floyd County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved use of the courthouse parking lot for a fireworks display by J&M Displays for the finale of the Miracle on Main Holiday Lighted Parade Dec. 5 in Charles City.
Four people injured in a mishap during this year’s Fourth of July fireworks display in Charles City recently filed a lawsuit against J&M.
At least 37 people were injured when a shell malfunction set off fireworks into the crowd. The fireworks were shot off from the parking lot of the former Theisen’s store.
J&M has done the Fourth of July fireworks display in Charles City “for many, many years,” said Floyd County Supervisor Arlin Enabnit.
In addition to the Fourth of July fireworks, the company began shooting off fireworks for the Holiday Lighted Parade several years ago.
“I guess we aren’t worried,” Enabnit said.
J&M, which is based out of Yarmouth, is bonded with $1 million in insurance, according to Enabnit.

Middle school renovations may be complete by March
CLEAR LAKE — If bids are acceptable, renovations at Clear Lake Middle School could be completed by late March, according to a timeline discussed Monday by the Clear Lake School Board.
The Mason City architectural firm of Bergland and Cram is close to completing bid documents for the project. Bids would be due on Dec. 18.
A recommendation would be made to the School Board at its Dec. 22 meeting.
If the bid process proceeds as expected, work could begin immediately.
The renovations will allow the district’s administrative staff, including the superintendent, to move into the middle school.
The administration offices have been at Clear Creek since the school district sold the administrative office building in downtown Clear Lake in August.
