A Halloween party attracted about 100 folks.
A Thanksgiving celebration is being planned.
The For The Community (FTC) betterment group is up and running.
“It all started basically because of the kids,” resident Craig Peverill said Sunday. “But it blossomed into, ‘Let’s make this for the whole community, not just the kids.’
“In three years I’ve seen it go from a not-so-nice place to live into a nice place. It has improved a lot,” he said.
The group, which is seeking non-profit status, wants more safety for youngsters in the park off South Eisenhower Avenue on the city’s west side.
So new stop signs, 10 mph speed signs and “Children At Play” signs are going up.
Kids and adults would like more activities.
The FTC is seeking donations of furniture and games for the spacious clubhouse (now open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) “so people can come down here and enjoy the space we have,” Peverill said.
They’re thinking movie nights for kids and teens, possibly bingo.
And hopefully they can form a neighborhood bond.
“The whole idea is to get this community to act like a community,” resident Phyllis Morgan said. “We’d like to get this community thing going where we all look out for each other, we all help each other. Because if you think about it, we’re like a small town. Why can’t we look out for each other?”
Thanksgiving dinner will be held from noon to 4 Thanksgiving Day in the clubhouse. FTC members will donate turkey and stuffing; other residents are asked to bring a dish or two to share.
Food will be delivered to those who can’t get out.
Beyond that, a “winter party” may also be on the horizon.
“We’ve had a lot of compliments on the Halloween party,” Peverill said. “So far, everything’s positive.”
