The memorial, located at the entrance of the city’s cemetery on Broadway Street, features three granite tablets inscribed with names of 311 veterans.
“We’re very happy with the way it turned out,” said post Commander Byron Hoyt.
“We spent hours and hours and hours going over the plans and criteria,” said Hoyt. “The names of soldiers from the Manly area are included, with room for more as people pass on or participate in our country’s military.”
Gene Ferden said members of the local Legion received substantial funding from casino proceeds.
“We decided we’d ask the people who run the casino if they’d help us out,” Ferden said. “And they really helped us out.”
After the Legion submitted a request, the Worth County Development Association, the group charged with dispersing Diamond Jo Casino grants, approved the plan.
The Manly Legion, which includes members from Plymouth, Kensett, Hanlontown and the surrounding area, received about $34,800.
A committee of eight spearheaded the project with help from Legion members.
“The whole project cost us a little more than the grant but the Legion had some memorial funds to pay for it,” said Hoyt.
It is uncertain when the cannon, one of three brought to Worth County in 1893, was placed at the cemetery.
“We decided since it was already in place it would be a good location for the memorial,” said Hoyt.
The granite work was ordered from Beringer Monument Co. in Hampton and the engraving was completed by Kallin Johnson Monuments in Fort Dodge. Work around the monument was done by Berding Construction Specialties of Mason City.
The center tablet includes the insignia of the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard.
Included are the names of 12 soldiers who were killed in action as well as one who remains missing in action.
Legion 110 also maintains an Avenue of Flags along the streets in front of the monument.
“There are 125 flags,” said Ferden. “Each flag pole has a nameplate of a veteran and when they served.”
Ferden said there is no formal Veterans Day ceremony planned for Tuesday.
“But we’d sure encourage everyone to come out and check it out,” he said. “Everyone who has seen it has commented on how nice it turned out. We’re very proud of it.”
