MASON CITY — Five Mason City High School graduates will be recognized in the 2008 Distinguished Alumni event Nov. 23-24.
Richard Stoyles, Class of 1949; Raymond Johnson, Class of 1956; John Oertel, Class of 1966; Susan Teas Smith, Class of 1969; and Lisa Winston Shaw, Class of 1976; will be honored.
The alumni are selected for their achievements and contributions to society after graduation and their ability to serve as good role models for MCHS students.
The recipients will be recognized during a reception on Sunday, Nov. 23, at The Music Man Square. Social time will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a dessert reception and introductions at 7 p.m.
Recipients will be introduced to the MCHS student body at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 24.
Community members who wish to attend the Sunday reception should call 641-421-4431 by Monday, Nov. 17, to make reservations. Reception cost is $7 per person.

Mason City woman sentenced to prison
MASON CITY — A 39-year-old Mason City woman was sentenced to up to two years in prison after being convicted of possession of methamphetamine (second offense).
Nancy A. Porter received a $625 suspended fine.
Cerro Gordo County District Judge James Drew ordered the two-year sentence be served concurrently with a sentence she is serving in Minnesota.
Porter was arrested in Cerro Gordo County in July 2007.

$10,000 lottery prize deadline is nearing
DES MOINES — The Iowa Lottery is searching for the holder of a $10,000 winning Powerball ticket sold in Mason City that will expire if it isn’t claimed by 4 p.m. Monday.
The ticket was sold at Kum & Go, 1303 Fourth St. S.W., for the $84.1 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Nov. 10, 2007. The ticket matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize. The winning numbers for that drawing were: 6-22-24-26-30 and Powerball 12.
Players in Iowa have up to 365 days from the date of the drawing to claim Powerball and Hot Lotto prizes.
Wolfram, Meyer win sanitary district seats
CLEAR LAKE — Robert “Bobby” Wolfram and Lothar Meyer won positions on the Clear Lake Sanitary District Board Tuesday night.
Wolfram, son of Ventura Mayor Bob Wolfram, defeated six challengers including longtime incumbent Don Morrison.
Wolfram received 1,025 votes. Other candidates and their vote totals were: Steve Nicklaus, 713; Morrison, 568; Darren Hewett, 504; Robin Faught, 434; Todd Hansen, 416; and Gary Hugi, 258.
In the election for the other seat, Meyer had 2,110 votes to Wesley Shubert’s 1,546.

Wright County towns approve option tax
CLARION — Voters in eight areas of Wright County approved 1 percent local option sales tax measures Tuesday night.
The results were:
• Unincorporated areas: 1,052 yes, 381 no, 73.4 percent majority.
• Belmond: 638 yes, 425 no, 60.0 percent majority.
• Clarion: 656 yes, 433 no, 60.2 majority.
• Dows: 136 yes, 68 no, 66.6 percent majority.
• Galt: 15 yes, 2 no, 88.2 percent majority.
• Goldfield: 162 yes, 100 no, 61.8 percent majority.
• Rowan: 56 yes, 16 no, 77.7 percent majority.
• Woolstock: 72 yes, 9 no, 88.8 percent majority.

Weekend fire causes not expected soon
MASON CITY — The causes of two weekend fires aren’t expected to be determined for awhile, investigators at the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office said Wednesday.
A spokesperson said it will be at least a week until a cause is determined in a Hampton house fire and a few weeks in the downtown Riceville fire.
In Riceville, the Friday night blaze started at the rear of County Line Locker and spread to the nearby True Value Hardware store. In Hampton, a fire started in one house and spread to another.
