MASON CITY — The Mason City community will have two opportunities to have informal conversations with Mason City Community Schools Superintendent Anita Micich this week.
Micich will be available for “Coffee and Conversation” from 6:30 to 8 a.m. on Thursday at Borealis and for a “Lunch & Learn Conversation” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Mason City Public Library in the Learning Center.
Coffee and light breakfast breads will be available at Borealis and community members may bring their lunch to the library on Friday.
Micich wants to learn more about the community, to share information about the schools and to talk about the future for Mason City students and the community.
These are the first of a series of conversation opportunities Micich plans. No reservations are required.

Council to hold work session
MASON CITY — The City Council will hold a work session at 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the city’s Comprehensive Plan, to talk about rundown properties on North Federal Avenue and to discuss options for the spec building owned by the former Mason City Economic Development Corp.
The meeting will be in the second floor conference room at City Hall.
16 appointed to energy study group
BUFFALO CENTER — North Iowa Community School Board members recently appointed 16 district residents to an Energy Study Task Force.
The fact-finding committee will meet throughout this school year. Members will study efficiencies, alternative energy sources, energy consumption alternatives and future energy decisions, Superintendent Larry Hill said.
They will self-divide into transportation, heating/cooling and electricity generation/production sub-committees.
Energy Study Task Force members are Brian Blodgett, Kim Davids, Matt Duve, Darrin Eastvold, Bruce Heetland, Jeff Heitland, Mike Holstad, Paul Jacobson, Royce Janssen, Randy Main, Tim Martinson, Kim Ruby, Marilee Siemens and Bryan Weringa.
Latham gets tax fighter award
WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, has been awarded the 110th Congress Tax Fighter Award by the National Tax-Limitation Committee (NTLC). The committee is a national organization that works to reduce the size and scope of the government at all levels.
