“It’s nice to be in the real world to see what it’s like,” said Olson, 17, a Lake Mills football player who received a spinal cord injury during a game Sept. 5. He has been at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., ever since.
On Oct. 3, Olson made his first trip outside the hospital grounds to the Apache Mall in Rochester in his new power wheelchair.
That same day he received a surprise: a phone call from Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Shawn Johnson.
On Oct. 6, he received a visit from a representative of the ABC-TV “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” crew, in the Albert Lea area working on a new home for an upcoming episode, as well as from Miss Minnesota, Miss Teen Minnesota, Mrs. Minnesota and two Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders.
The Lake Mills High School cheerleaders also visited him that day.
“That was pretty sweet,” Olson said in a telephone interview Friday with the Globe Gazette.
He also received a video message from another guy named Ty: “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” host Ty Pennington.
Olson is keeping up with his schoolwork with help from a tutor.
He continues to undergo physical therapy.
“It’s challenging, but pretty good,” he said. “It’s not always the most fun, but I know I have to do it to get strong and get out of here.”
Olson may be discharged from the hospital at the end of November.
A Web site was set up for Olson through CaringBridge shortly after he was taken to St. Marys.
The site includes an online guestbook and journal.
Family members have been making frequent journal entries on the site to keep everyone updated on his progress.
Olson made his first journal entry Thursday with help of a family friend who took dictation.
“Your messages of support are so encouraging, that you have not forgotten about me after a month,” the entry stated. I appreciate all of you!”
